HIPAA Requirements

In a Nutshell

Clients' personal health information (PHI or ePHI) must be protected both

- at rest (i.e., when it is stored)

and

- in transit (i.e., when transmitted over a network)

If you enter PHI into a computer in any way, then the computer is "in scope" (required to comply with HIPAA regulation), regardless of whether or not the information is permanently stored on the machine.

You are responsible for ensuring the security of PHI of your clients, and for complying with HIPAA requirements.
